Looking back a bit is necessary

Here I am again, two years after I wrote my last retrospection on this blog. Many things have happened since then, good and bad, and I have been fortunate enough to have more of the good ones.

So here are some of my (sometimes not-important) thoughts about many things in our creative industry and about myself:

1. 2011 has been the most exciting year in photography. Thanks to Instagram, which was chosen as the application of the year by Apple, more and more people are so into photography these days.

2. Number of professionals in commercial photography in Indonesia remain pretty much the same as many years ago. Many have come and go, and they usually stayed in the business not more than two years. Why? I guess the business side is not what many people expect to be a pro.

I've told them that putting my face on the backdrop wouldn't help

The worst thing about entrepreneurship forums? People do get addicted. Not to the entrepreneurship, but to the events. I have met some very interesting people during some of my sharing sessions, telling me that they had attended a lot of seminars and loved them so much. I thought, “Maybe it’s time to stop going to seminars and invest your time to actually start your business. In short, start working and stop wasting your time!” I didn’t say it though. I wanted to go home safely.

Saya ketemu René pertama kali di rumah Oscar Lawalata, sewaktu si empunya rumah lagi ultah. Begitu bersalaman, dia langsung melontarkan berbagai pujian soal hasil-hasil foto saya. Tentu saja senang mendengarnya, karena terdengar tulus. Obrolan berikutnya lebih menyenangkan lagi, karena ngobrolin soal wine. Satu dekade. 10 tahun. 120 bulan. 3,652 hari. 87,648 jam. It was a fine afternoon in January 2010… clear and breezy. I could not take my eyes away from the horizon in the sea of Rajaampat, Papua. Being away from Jakarta always brings me a good mood to give a quality time to myself (an exception to my toilet affair every morning, which is awesome, but doesn’t include a million dollar view like what I had).

One thing I did remember: I forgot more things. It’s funny to see that our hunger of excitements only fuels our source of forgetfulness. I thought I better write down a few things that I considered interesting to remember in 2009, so I can remember to use it when trying to look smart in front of new clients.
